OUR HISTORY

Holy Cross Orthodox Hospital is a general hospital owned by Uganda Orthodox Church under the network of Uganda Orthodox Medical Bureau. It forms part of the Uganda Orthodox Church Healthcare network and the biggest in Uganda. It shares its prestige with, Mengo, Kibuli, Nsambya, Old Kampala, Rubaga Hospitals which belong to the Private not for Profit (PNFP) health sub sector.

HCOH was founded in 1963 (by Dr. Demetrios Dimopoulos, a Cypriot physician, who practiced in Kampala from 1962 until his death in1968, this makes it the first dispensary in the Uganda Orthodox Church. It is situated at Uganda Orthodox Church Headquarters at Namungoona Hill along Hoima road, 6KM from the city centre. By nature of its location, it is close to the central business district of Kampala and Wakiso districts. It is also surrounded by several townships of Nakulabye, Kasubi, Nansana and villages such as Lugala, Masanafu, Kawaala, Namungoona.

Virtues and principles

HOLY CROSS ORTHODOX HOSPITAL VIRTUES:

Delivery of the Hospital’s services is guided by the Holy Cross Orthodox Hospital Values which include:

Love: `

This virtue depicts the Love our lord had to the people which we must always remember in all our health practices. The hospital will ensure that this image of God in terms of “LOVE’ is not violated and should always be seen when staffs are dealing with the patients.

Obedience:

The hospital management will ensure that obedience is also seen at all levels of operation and will strive to see that healing and curing mission is enhanced.

Trustworthiness:

It is known that patients always put trust in the medical people by risking their lives in them. This is also emphasized in the Orthodox Church as a virtue. That trust put in them will guide the relationship between the patient and the staff of holy cross Hospital.

Loyalty

This will be emphasized that staff remain loyal to their institution in order to glorify God. They will be accountable for their actions. The sense of faithfulness will be observed at all operational levels of the hospital.

Openness:

All operations in the hospital will be done in an open manner with integrity

Dedication:

The management and staff of holy cross are stewards; they should ensure that they continue to dedicate their time in order to serve with the highest level of commitment

Selflessness:

The value emphasizes caring about other people other than one’s self. This will be seen at all levels of management of patients and other public offices of the hospital.

Respect:

Self respect and command of respect and respect for others shall also be emphasized at all times in the hospital operations

Team work:

Team work will also be key in our health care operations as it emphasizes departmental and staff collaborations to achieve total quality management.

Strategic Objectives

Relating to its Mission and Vision, Holy cross will aspire to achieve the following strategic objectives that are within the priority areas.

  1. To enhance accessibility to quality and curative health services to communities within and around the catchment area of the hospital.
  2. To employ adequate, productive, well motivated and qualified human resource that are able to provide total quality health care services
  3. Provide convenient and adequate service environment
  4. To ensure good corporate governance and effective management systems
  5. To improve the image of the hospital to the outside world and its visibility as a caring Orthodox hospital, while reflecting the institutional virtues in service delivery
  6. To reduce its reliance on user fees
  7. To establish the hospital as a training centre for interns and other health workers
  8. To engage in research activities
